Q and A
To use at the peak of freshness, our products should be used within 9-12 months after opening. Prior to opening, our products should maintain their freshness for 18-24 months.
Read the ingredients listing on your products. If you see the word ‘fragrance’ or ‘perfume’ or ‘parfum’, you will know that synthetic/artificial fragrance has been added. Keep in mind that products that also use essential oils and/or tout themselves as being “natural” can still use artificial fragrances or perfumes. This allows them the opportunity to market the use of essential oils, however it does not limit their ability to supplement with artificial fragrance. At Hummingbird Farms we only use plant ingredients and essential oils for their natural scent.
All of our products are aloe-based instead of the more common base of water, which you will find in most products. You will notice that the first ingredient listed on all our liquid soaps and lotions is aloe rather than water. What this means to you is that you will used 1/3 to ½ less per application than you would with a water-based product; think of a dime-sized amount for your hands. Of course you can reapply as needed. Because we start with aloe and do not add water, we do not need to use as many fillers and thickeners.
Yes, it is a long word and sounds a bit scary, doesn’t it? Don’t worry, it is a preservative derived from the naturally occurring amino acid, glycine. It is often used in cosmetics and skin care products as a natural alternative to parabens. All products must use a preservative of some sort, as you must prevent bacteria build up in bottles that could become harmful. The risks associated of not using preservatives is far greater than any possible risk of using a quality preservative. However, there are many preservatives to choose from, so it is important to use the best quality, naturally derived preservative so as not to cause irritation on your skin. Sodium hydroxymethylglicinate is an effective preservative because of its ability to cover a broad spectrum of microbes at extremely low concentrations between .1% to 1%.
The most common culprit of gluten in body and hair care is hydrolyzed wheat protein, which we do not use. We do not use wheat-derived ingredients and feel quite safe in saying that our products are gluten free. However, if you have celiac disease we do advise caution with our products, or any other products, as there can always be a slight risk in cross contamination. We do our very best in quality control to ensure this does not happen, but we always advise caution.

Of course if your pump is faulty we will replace it for you immediately. Sometimes shipping and/or varying weather conditions can cause some issues that could cause you to question if the pump is faulty, so here are two steps to follow:
(1). Be sure the collar around the pump is twisted tightly closed around the opening of the bottle. If the collar is loose, the pump will not dispense product.
(2). The new airless pump technology of the Lavender Heavy Cream No. 518 will require you to prime the pump for first use. Depress the pump several times until the cream is dispensed, usually 2-3 times. In varying weather conditions it is possible that up to 10 pumps will be required.
